Questions To Ask A Towing Company When You Break Down While Driving With Children

A vehicle breaking down late in the evening while traveling out of your area can be a difficult experience for anyone. For parents traveling with children in the car, the experience can be a nightmare. You'll need to try to keep your children calm while you prepare the vehicle to be towed. Make sure your 4-way blinkers are on and attach something bright to the back of your vehicle if you are able to. 

Here are a few important questions to ask the towing company when you place a call to them for help. 

Can you accommodate the children & their car seats?

Since you've broken down while out of your home area, you likely don't know any friends or family nearby who you could call for help in transporting your children to safety. Therefore, you'll need to find a towing company that has room in the truck to accommodate you, your children, and their car seats. So, be sure to ask. If you have a roadside assistance membership, call them and they will be able to help you find a towing company that can accommodate your needs. 

An alternative to you and your children riding in the tow truck is to call for one of the popular rideshare services. However, when ordering one, be sure that the driver knows that you have children and car seats to install and how many. Don't be surprised, however, if you cannot find a rideshare driver willing to be hired. Fortunately, many towing companies will know who to call for help if they are not able to provide seating for everyone.

Can you tow the car to a repair shop that is near a hotel?

When calling for a tow truck, you will be asked where you want to have the vehicle towed. Since you broke down in an unfamiliar area and likely have no idea where the most suitable location is for your needs, ask the tow truck if there are any vehicle repair shops in the area that are within close proximity to a hotel where you can stay with your children overnight until your vehicle can be repaired tomorrow. Then ask the tow truck driver if he or she will be able to transport you and your children to the hotel as well as transport your vehicle to the repair shop. By staying in a hotel close to the repair shop, the mechanic may offer to pick you and your children up or drive your vehicle to you after it's been repaired.
